Major Causes of Texas Auto Accidents

Each year thousands of accidents occur on Texas roadways. Sadly, many of these vehicle crashes result in severe injuries and, in some cases, even fatalities. Most of these accidents were preventable, and the drivers could have avoided catastrophe by adhering to traffic laws and practicing driver safety.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TDOT) lists several causes of statewide auto accidents on Texas roadways, the main three being failure to control speed, lack of attention and driving in more than one lane at a time. Accidents caused by speeding alone make up more than 113,000 of the total yearly crashes. Other causes include:

  • Unsafe lane changes — When drivers fail to signal before switching lanes or attempt to do so without adequate room, accidents involving motorcycles and other cars can occur.
  • Failure to yield the right of way at left turns and stop signs — This can cause traffic not to flow as expected, resulting in collisions. Every driver has an obligation to pay attention and follow established traffic rules.
  • Driving at an unsafe speed — While driving at an unsafe speed isn’t the most common cause of motor vehicle crashes in Texas, it contributes to a significant number of incidents. Traveling at unsafe speeds, such as going 45 mph on a 75 mph road, makes it harder for other drivers on the road to control their vehicles.
  • Failure to take evasive action — When a driver doesn’t perform the proper maneuver to avoid an accident, that is known as “failure to take evasive action,” and it is another main reason why collisions occur. All drivers must be on the alert for road hazards and take action to avoid them when they arise. For example, if someone is crossing the street and the driver sees but does not stop in time to avoid hitting them, then they failed to take evasive action.
  • Tailgating — Tailgaters are more than just a nuisance. Following a car too closely puts both drivers at risk. Distance between cars matters and is key in preventing tailgating accidents.
