10 Tips for Avoiding a Crash in Poor Weather Conditions

Bad weather can create hazardous driving conditions that can lead to accidents. When the weather takes a turn for the worse, it's important for drivers to take precautions to avoid crashing.

The following are 10 other tips to help you stay safe on the roads during poor weather conditions:

  1. Always check the forecast before leaving so that you know what to expect. If possible, try to postpone or reroute your trip so that you can avoid the worst of the weather.
  2. Slow down and use caution when driving in wet or icy conditions. Adjust your speed according to the weather and road conditions.
  3. Keep a safe distance from other cars, and be especially careful when passing or changing lanes.
  4. Use your headlights even during the day, as visibility may be reduced due to rain or snowfall.
  5. Make sure your windshield wipers are working properly, and keep an extra set of windshield wiper blades in your car in case you need to replace them.
  6. Be prepared for unexpected stops by keeping your brakes in good working condition.
  7. If you start to skid, don't panic. Stay calm and steer in the direction of the skid until you regain control of your vehicle.
  8. Avoid driving if possible, especially during severe weather conditions such as heavy rain or snowstorms. If you must drive, take extra precautions and allow yourself extra time to reach your destination safely.
  9. Don't try to pass another vehicle if you can't see at least 500 feet ahead of you.
  10. Make sure to keep your phones charged until you make it to your destination in case you need to pull over and call for help.

While bad weather can be unpredictable, if you follow the tips above, you could greatly reduce the chances of getting injured in an auto accident.
